Carl Wegner
Carl is a pioneer and has lead innovations in banking and fintech that have helped shape the Asia financial services industry into what it is today.
Originally from the US, he has spent 4 decades in Asia, initially as a transaction banker. He established the first offices of the Bank of Boston in China in the '80s, and in the 90s, he founded the first Cash Management team for any foreign bank in China, this time for Standard Chartered Bank. His teams successfully implemented RMB internationalization programs for both Standard Chartered and Deutsche Bank, while based in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
After a successful career in transaction banking, he has since spearheaded fintech innovations to revolutionize the trade and supply chain landscape. He set-up and lead fintech business teams in Asia for TradeCard (now InforNexus), one of the first cloud-based international trade finance platforms, and for R3, the largest bank consortium to explore blockchain solutions. In 2020 he was appointed CEO of Contour by 8 founding banks including global banks BNP, Citi, HSBC, ING, and SCB. In less than 3 years, he grew this to a network of 22 banks in 50 countries, digitalizing the global Letters of Credit ecosystem.
After the successful sale of Contour, he set up WegnerAsia to bring his wealth of experience to advise fintechs in payments, trade, and blockchain on their next level of profitable growth.
Now based in Singapore, he is a regular writer, lecturer and commentator on topics at the forefront of the industry, including embedded finance, digitalization and Defi innovation, in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
